paper artist of the week: miriam londoño

Image
leidse verhalen, 2007 "for londoño paper is not the traditional support for texts, drawings or something else. the paper, on the contrary, comes to the foreground as an independent presence in itself...her forms are built up of words written in the air and drawings made in the air, consisting of paper only. this gives the work a remarkable duplicity." miriam londoño has developed an interesting papermaking technique whereby, using cotton and linen linters, she writes out sketches of script that become the paper itself. born in columbia and currently based in the hague, she has traveled extensively and studied papermaking techniques from masters of each locale. you can see more of her amazing work here . la noche oscura, 2007 three figures , 2004 solo exhibition , columbo americano, columbia, 2007

paper artist of the day: heather smith jones

Image
my friend jackie, of the wonderful blog peppermags , sent me a link to an apartment therapy article on a wallpaper pinhole project by heather smith jones and it's stunning! for over a year heather has been envisioning this project, and began last october. she's a pinhole artist (piercing paper with a needle, one hole at a time) and, fascinated with the history of wallpaper, had the brilliant idea to apply her art to the craft of creating wallpaper. from her website , a statement on her technique: "five years ago i began the pinhole technique as i was researching australian aboriginal art. i translated their use of painted dots by piercing tiny needle sized holes through paper to create pattern, text, and image. to me, this slow, repetitive process reflects constancy and yet the fleeting nature of time. combining the pinhole’s specificity with symbiotic ways of painting, i feel i can discover and reveal meaning. paper artist of the day: paul hayes.

Image
san francisco installation artist paul hayes creates the most amazing overhead scenes. i've read that if you allow yourself time enough gazing up that his installations begin to move and swirl and you become a part of that kinetic energy his work suggests. here's how he describes his art... "part of what I'm doing is bringing a sterilized, processed, manmade product and returning it to the kind of arrangement that occurs naturally in biology, because these arrangements are often the most beautiful ones to me. lately i've been incorporating the suggestion of currents moving through the installation indicating force, motion and direction." (quote via paper forest ) these images are of a recent site-specific intallation for johansson projects . to view more images of this and other beautiful installations, go here .

paper art of the day: sounds of silence.

Image
in the 2006 installation series sounds of silence , petra eichler (architect) and susanne kessler (artist) created "spaces in which silence becomes an experience in itself. the resulting atmosphere projects a stillness on the observer, both mentally and physically. the visitor leaves behind the layers of everyday noise and is led into an unusual situation brimming with poetry." made of white paper silhouettes, in sound1 a natural landscape evolved and the visitor was invited to become a part of the environment, walking in and among the scene as the light changed and stillness emerged. to see a short film of the experience, go here . beautiful!
