paper artist of the week: sam winston



when i was first considering starting a blog, sam winston was an artist i wanted to feature right away - he combines his love of typography, language and art in such a unique way. as it happens, i've been blogging a bit now and haven't yet featured him. fortunately, the blogging world has been rich with posts of his work recently to remind me.

in november of '07, he was commissioned to create a new body of work to celebrate the reopening of the saison poetry library of southbank centre royal festival hall in london. the feature piece of this exhibition was the folded dictionary (image above), a large-scale scuplture using all 20 volumes of the complete oxford english dictionary.

sam's fascination with language and the written word is at least in part fueled by his dyslexia, which has allowed him to "blur the boundaries between words and text, enabling him to disassociate their literal meanings and see their artistic potential as purely visual tools instead."

palo samko.

this is going to be a huge post, but i can't help but post a gazillion pics of what i find to be some of the most amazing handcrafted furniture i've ever seen. palo samko is based in brooklyn, and that's about all i know, except to say that he has phenomenal woodworking skills! the designs and the attention to detail are just so, so beautiful ~ my jaw quite literally dropped with every click through the slideshow! enjoy! {via roadside scholar }
