shibori is a japanese term for methods of dyeing cloth by binding, stitching, folding, twisting, and compressing. in japan, the earliest known example of cloth dyed with the shibori technique dates back to the 8th century where indigo was the main dye used.

These are lovely images. I recently heard about another Japanese dyeing process. You place flowers or leaves between layers of natural fabric. Then bang them carefully with a hammer to break up the fibres and let the natural dyes run into the fabric in a rough shape of the flower. Then iron it to fix the dye. I haven't been able to find out the name of this method. But had a little go and amazingly it works!
