i love this piece by helen friel , based on a city described in italo calvino's book 'invisible cities' in which the inhabitants stretch strings between buildings to mark each new relationship. why can't we do this? it would be so pretty, no? {via design*sponge ~ thanks jackie for the link!}

incredible, beautiful cut-paper collage drawings by val britton . i make immersive collaged drawings that draw on the language of maps. the impetus for this body of work was my longing to connect to my father, a truck driver who drove eighteen-wheelers across the country hauling industrial machinery. he died over ten years ago. based on road maps of the u.s., routes my father often traveled, and an invented conglomeration, mutation, and fragmentation of those passageways, my works on paper help me piece together the past and make up the parts i cannot know.

an excerpt from the artist statement of noriko ambe ... so to speak, i have been mapping the mysterious land between physical and emotional geography. even though the actions are simple, i do not try to draw / cut mechanical or perfect lines in my work, for subtle natural distortions convey the nuances of human emotions, habits, or biorhythm. when I am drawing or cutting lines, i am interested in observing the power of the changing growing shape. this dynamic shape becomes an entity in itself, "another geography." in a sense, the empty space is myself, and the materials represent the present world. cutting book work is like collaboration for me. and it is important to choose the materials carefully because printed matter conveys a message automatically. the relationship between the linear actions and the materials is like the relationship between human beings and their restricted environment... i am especially intrigued by the flat globe series in metal cabinets. view her im...

building bridges amazing book carvings by texas artist jennifer khoshbin . in her own words: in a series of small, self-contained, conceptual pieces...my focus has turned to the sculptural use of books. i methodically carve each page to create a “depth of thought”, and minimally design the surface...in these experiments i am trying to delve into the books, into facts and knowledge, as a way to understand my world. using the surface space to express what i “dig-up”, i seek some resolution between the organic and the inorganic, hoping for the authentic. the bride stripped bear 12 july 1962 daunted
