sustainable living: samso

Image
the danish island of samso, in 10 years, has cut its carbon footprint by 140%, and is now a model for 100% sustainability ~ with a simple grid of wind farms, solar panels and sheep. and it has been entirely a grassroots effort ~ all traditional fossil-fuel plants have been closed and dismantled, and new renewable-energy plants are owned by either individuals or a collective of residents of the island. in fact, the island's carbon footprint is negative, as it exports millions of kilowatt hours of electricity from renewable energy sources. we are not hippies, says soren harmensen (the project's mastermind). we just want to change how we use our energy without harming the planet or without giving up the good life. such a wonderful story ~ read the full report here . {via the guardian }

sustainable living: moss installation

Image
incredible green (literally) advertising! last year, edina tokodi was commissioned by the southeastern pennsylvania transportation authority to develop a campaign to help commuters understand the positive environmental impact of regularly mass transit use. the installation included green walls and navigable moss icons in the market east station.

caroline swift.

Image
really beautiful products from caroline swift , who was previously head of knitwear for benetton. at some point, she became disillusioned by mass production, and began to focus on her philosophy of slow design ~ where care is taken and quality paramount...it is a philosophy about taking pleasure and pride in making things and passing that on. every piece is unique, and beautiful, including irish linen clothing, handblown glass and gorgeous paper-thin ceramic pieces.

paper artist of the week: teresa ilene redden

Image
i offer these objects as quiet, intimate moments with pattern. individual rings of white, 24 pound acid free paper are woven together in planned sequences and affixed into stationary forms. these delicate sculptures are all of a scale that would fit in the palm of one’s hand and would blow away with a breath. vulnerable and ephemeral, each piece stands still and generates a quiet rhythm created by the predictable order of its repeat pattern. whispering about form and structure, they beckon one to slow down and pause. ~ excerpt from artist statement have i mentioned i love paper? gorgeous objects by teresa ilene redden
