sustainable living find of the day: straw straw

Image
straw straw by yuki iida winner of last year's muji award 03 the original meaning of the term "straw" was "wheat straw". straws of wheat are forms created by nature; they are materials that return to the soil. there is no waste in either the shape itself, or in its actual existence.

imaginary drizzle.

when i was maybe 7, i gave my mom the most ridiculous gift for mother's day. i made essentially a pillow, in the shape of a cloud and rainbow, with satin ribbons hanging loosely as rain. i sketched the design onto the fabric (with those markings still visible in the completed project, ha) and handstitched it. and if i remember correctly, i used markers to color the lines of the rainbow ~ very fancy! i wasn't happy with it just being a pillow, so i convinced my mom to hang it over a lamp, to approximate the light of the sun behind the cloud (?) ~ i have no idea. anyway, she proudly displayed it this way for quite a while, and i bet if i spent enough time looking, i'd find it somewhere in her house today. this somehow reminds me of that. only it's a really, really beautiful grown-up version that i'd love to have in my home. i'm afraid i don't know who styled this, but the lovely photos are by carl kleiner , and the fantastic dress is by emma redeskog .

sustainable living find of the day: willow playhouse

Image
phenomenal! handmade dreaming spires willow playhouse by judith needham . willow...is annually renewable and will gradually degrade over about 5 years - which is about the length of time a child will remain interested in using a playhouse. at the end of its life, it can simply be recycled in your own garden ~ as kindling, compost bin or as garden mulch.
